Headscarves and hymens by mona eltahawy6/12/2023 Amazon's view was it was drawing too much attention to the breasts. Bateman said: "There's a belly button, there's lower cleavage. Amazon initially refused to list Bateman's book next to other feminist works on their massive retail website, citing the cover art as the issue. Promoting Naked Feminism during and after its release in the United Kingdom has been a struggle, for reasons anyone who works with nude bodies-much more direct depictions of sexuality-will be familiar with. She strips down to illustrate that "all women are both body and brain." She's out to upend the structures in which women's "respect depends on their bodily modesty," which she says undergirds everything from slut shaming to honor killings. Where my nudity is often for profit, though, hers is for protest. As a semi-retired adult entertainer, I can attest to this. "When I reveal my body, I reveal much more about other people than I do of myself," Bateman said. Feminist economist Victoria Bateman was naked on our Zoom call, and so was I, while we discussed her latest book, Naked Feminism: Breaking the Cult of Female Modesty, which will be released in the United States on May 16.

Now we wrap up looking at this 2006 TV event with the final four entries. Previously, we watched some good episodes and some less-than-good ones in the first half of the miniseries. Each of the installments in NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES are unique and unrelated to each other. Castle Rock, the new series on Hulu, is an anthology but one with each season having a self-contained story. NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES remains, as of this date, the only anthology miniseries of which he’s ever been a part. Whether it’s adapting his short stories or penning original entries, his work has appeared in CREEPSHOW, CREEPSHOW 2, CAT’S EYE, TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE-not to mention episodes of The X-Files, The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone, Tales From the Darkside, and Monsters. Rob Dean: King has been a part of other anthologies in the past. Each week Alejandra Gonzalez and Rob Dean will discuss a new miniseries project of King’s, with today’s installment being on the final four installments of 2006’s NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES. King Of All Media looks at those adaptations, starting with his TV miniseries in chronological order. His books have been best sellers since his debut and have gone on to spawn numerous adaptations in film, TV, video games, and other media. Stephen King is the most influential voice in horror of the late 20th century.

The book of herodotus6/11/2023 The new Egyptian king, Psammetichus, decided to find out what language was the most ancient, and the experiment he conducted involved isolating two newly born children from any language by prohibiting their caretakers from pronouncing any words in their presence as they were growing up. Many other myths are told in Book One, along with accounts from the Persian Empire where Herodotus had traveled.īook Two begins with the conquest of Egypt and a description of an experiment that exemplifies Herodotus’ writing: storytelling instead of merely recording dates and events. Herodotus interprets this well-known story in a more historical vein, eliminating elements of supernatural intervention and making his interpretation closer to history than mythology. In Book One, Herodotus describes the abduction of Helen, wife of the king of Sparta, by Paris, a Trojan prince, causing the Trojan War. It is important to understand that, for the Greeks, myths were not only a part of their religion in the modern sense but also part of their historical heritage in other words, their mythology was in some respects their history. One aspect that might surprise the reader exploring The Histories is that the author dedicates remarkable attention to describing mythological stories.

Machine Metal Magic by Hanna Dare6/11/2023 I was a little surprised to find that they weren't just closed-door, but practically physical-contact free (I think both of them have, like, one kiss in them? Two maybe?) given that they were self-published originally and then picked up by Orbit, which tends to the two-and-a-half sex scene romance convention.Īnother huge squee read for me. Huge squee for these two from me! I think Half a Soul was the stronger of the two, with both a more compelling MMC and a better setup, but they were both pretty great. Half a Soul and Ten Thousand Stitches by Olivia Atwater.Love Laugh Litch and The Orc from the Office by Kate Priorĭid I enjoy these? Yes! Do I have anything interesting to say about them? Nope!.What if I did a reading roundup from last month? With some excerpts from my reading journal, even? Romance

Alex ross fantastic four full circle6/10/2023 While Ross’s kinetic artwork presents each cosmic enemy as a villain to be reckoned with, the series of encounters and battles don’t build to any real conflict or climax. Unfortunately, the script doesn’t do justice to the stunning visuals. But breaking from his usual style, Ross employs heavy inks and a bold, almost clashing color palette to recall the art of Kirby and the vibrancy of ’60s-era superhero comics. Ross is known for capturing the grandiosity of superheroes in fully painted artwork, and here he uses the dynamic angles to draw the Four as they hurtle over fantastic cities and nightmare-scapes. After a mysterious figure from the Four’s past breaks into their headquarters bearing an alien menace, the team soon find themselves in the Negative Zone, where they encounter a series of their greatest enemies including Annihilus and the Nega-Man. Eisner winner Ross ( Marvels), in his first solo written and drawn superhero adventure, offers a majestically drawn sequel to a 1966 Fantastic Four story line by comics legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Word of mouse book6/10/2023 I can’t wait for the next book in the series (which I hope will follow). Out of all the books I have read, this one’s moral lesson is my favourite. With a central theme of Leave No Mouse Behind, the story offers lots of moments to cheer the good guys as Isaiah, a tiny blue mouse with unusual powers (such as reading) escapes from a research lab, determined to save his still-imprisoned family from awful fates. It teaches us that all animals and humans should have equal rights and highlights the importance of family. I really enjoyed the book and would rate it 5 out of 5. He meets an unusual human girl and with her help, Isaiah the brave tries to free his mischief. Luckily, he meets a kind, young, caring and beautiful mouse named Mikayla who welcomes him in their mischief of over 200 “normal” mice! Finally, he has a new family and home, but the danger is not over. He lives in the horrible Lamina Lab and he and his 96 brothers and sisters have made an escape!īut Isaiah finds himself alone in a stinky sewer pipe. Isaiah is young, curious and very fast but unsure of his place in the world. It offers a new perspective through the eyes of a peculiar blue-furred mouse named Isaiah. Word Of Mouse is an adventurous story of a tiny mouse with a big heart. By James Patterson, Chris Grabenstein, & Joe Sutphin (Penguin Random House) ISBN: 978-1-1 |
